1. What are cookies
Cookies are small text files that are stored on your device when you visit a website. They allow websites to recognize your device and remember your preferences or activity across sessions. Cookies are widely used to enhance user experience and enable website functionality.
In addition to cookies, Philosopher's Notes and our service providers use other similar technologies to collect information about your device and your use of the Services:
- Web beacons: Transparent images placed on web pages that track when a page is loaded.
- Pixels: Similar to web beacons; small tracking files that record information about user interactions.
- Local storage: Browser-based storage that persists data beyond the current session without user deletion.
- Similar technologies: Log files, mobile device identifiers, and similar tracking mechanisms.
Cookies can be classified as either first-party or third-party:
- First-party cookies: Set by the website you are directly visiting (philosophersnotes.com).
- Third-party cookies: Set by domains other than the one you are visiting, often by ad networks, analytics providers, or social media platforms.
2. How we use cookies
We use cookies and similar technologies for the following purposes:
Essential/Strictly Necessary Cookies
These cookies are required for the website to function properly. They enable basic functions such as page navigation, account login, session management, and security features. Without these cookies, the website cannot operate.
Performance/Analytics Cookies
These cookies collect information about how visitors use our website, such as which pages are visited most, how users navigate, and how long they stay on pages. This data helps us understand user behavior and improve the Services.
Functional Cookies
These cookies enable the website to remember your choices and preferences, such as language settings, login information, or saved items, so that you have a more personalized experience on your next visit.
Targeting/Advertising Cookies
These cookies are used to deliver advertising that is relevant to your interests. They track your browsing behavior across websites and create a profile of your interests, allowing advertisers to show you tailored ads.
Social Media Cookies
These cookies are set by social media platforms to enable social sharing functionality and to track your interactions with social media content embedded on our website.
3. Cookie categories and management
Rather than listing individual cookies by name, we organize cookies into the categories described above. Cookies from different vendors and service providers may be grouped within these categories.
Non-essential cookies are managed through our consent management platform, CookieScript. When you first visit Philosopher's Notes, you will be presented with a cookie banner that allows you to:
- Accept all cookies and similar technologies.
- Reject all non-essential cookies.
- Customize your cookie preferences by category using the cookie preference center.
You can manage your cookie preferences at any time by visiting the cookie preference center on the website.
4. Specific technologies
Philosopher's Notes uses the following technologies to enhance user experience and measure effectiveness. Please note that deployed technologies are subject to change as we optimize our Services:
Klaviyo
Klaviyo is a marketing automation platform used to deliver personalized email and SMS campaigns. This cookie assigns a unique identifier to site visitors and links their browsing behavior — such as product views, cart activity, and page visits — to a marketing profile. It is used to enable behavioral targeting, audience segmentation, and automated messaging such as browse and cart abandonment flows.
5. Global Privacy Control (GPC)
Global Privacy Control (GPC) is a browser and device-level privacy preference signal that informs websites of your wish to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information.
Philosopher's Notes honors GPC signals where required by law. When CookieScript detects a GPC signal in your browser, we automatically suppress non-essential cookies and technologies, including those used for targeted advertising and analytics beyond what is strictly necessary.
GPC is distinct from the “Do Not Track” (DNT) signal, which Philosopher's Notes does not currently respond to. DNT is a browser-level preference with no legal mandate for websites to honor it, whereas GPC has specific legal recognition under state privacy laws such as CPRA.
6. Downstream opt-out propagation
When you opt out of non-essential cookies and technologies through our cookie preference center or GPC, we communicate your opt-out preference to our advertising partners and service providers.
7. How to manage cookies
You can manage cookies in several ways:
Cookie Preference Center
Use the cookie preference center on Philosopher's Notes to customize which categories of cookies you allow.
Browser Settings
Most browsers allow you to control cookies through their settings. You can typically choose to accept, reject, or delete cookies. Note that disabling cookies may affect your ability to use certain features of the website.
Industry Opt-Out Tools
You can opt out of targeted advertising across multiple websites using industry-standard opt-out mechanisms:
- AboutAds.info choices (aboutads.info/choices) for Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA) member networks.
- Network Advertising Initiative (NAI) opt-out (optout.networkadvertising.org).
Mobile Device Settings
Mobile devices typically offer settings to limit tracking and control app-based advertising. On iOS, you can use the Limit Ad Tracking setting. On Android, you can adjust your ad preferences in the Google settings.
8. Changes to this policy
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, legal requirements, or other factors. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated policy on the website and updating the “Last updated” date above. Your continued use of the Services following such changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
