New PN: The Gap and The Gain
![]() |
The High Achievers’ Guide to Happiness, Confidence, and Successby Dan Sullivan with Dr. Benjamin Hardy |
“The way to measure your progress is backward against where you started, not against your ideal.”DAN SULLIVAN |
FROM THE BOOK“When you understand Dan [Sullivan]’s teachings and tools, success and freedom become inevitable.β
β
I can attest to this myself. I started learning from Dan in 2014 during the first year of my PhD program. Back then, I was making $12,000 per year as a graduate research assistant. Through Dan’s teachings, I was able to create a seven-figure business and build a team before graduating. Since then, I’ve continued to apply Who Not How to create increasing results and freedom in my life.
β
But as excited as I was to share Who Not How with the world, I’m even more excited to share The Gap and The Gain. Having spent the last 12 years getting a PhD in psychology and reading over 1,000 books on the topic, I can say with conviction that I’ve never found a concept or a framework as succinct, clear, and useful as The GAP and The GAIN.
β
Within this one simple concept is a master class on positive psychology, healthy relationships, mental well-being, and high performance. Everything that psychologists know about how to create a high-functioning and successful person can be achieved using The GAP and The GAIN.
β
It’s the ultimate simplification or what Dan would call an ‘intellectual shortcut.’”

Brian's Notes
The GAP and The GAIN.
I’m really excited to walk you through this “intellectual shortcut” that will change your life.
Note: I didn’t say “may” change your life I said “will” change your life. I don’t think I’ve ever said that but, well, that’s how confident I am that really intellectually getting this distinction and then practically applying this distinction will truly change your life.
I got this book and started reading it years ago. For whatever reason, I didn’t get far into it. Then, it got lost in my library of thousands of books. So, I bought a new copy. I pulled it off the shelf and started reading it this morning. I read it cover to cover. It’s PHENOMENAL. (Get a copy here.)
This is the fourth Note on one of Ben Hardy’s books I’ve created so far.
I started with The Science of Scaling which is all about “How to Grow Your Business Bigger and Faster Than You Think Possible.”
Then we covered Be Your Future Self Now which is another great book all about “The Science of Intentional Transformation.” Then we covered Personality Isn’t Permanent which is all about how to “Break Free from Self-Limiting Beliefs and Rewrite Your Story.” (Also fantastic!)
I’ll be creating Notes on Who Not How and 10x Is Easier than 2x (another couple of books Ben wrote with Dan Sullivan) along with his first two books Willpower Doesn’t Work soon—at which point we will have completed our tour through his existing canon.
Of course, Ben is still only in his 30s and is as productive as a couple other young thinkers I also love: Ryan Holiday and Cal Newport, so I look forward to reading and featuring more of his wisdom in the years (and decades!) ahead.
Dan Sullivan is, according to his bio, “the world’s foremost expert on entrepreneurship and has coached more successful entrepreneurs than anyone on the planet. He is the cofounder of Strategic Coach, the leading entrepreneurial coaching program in the world.”
Dr. Ben Hardy is an organizational psychologist and the co-founder of Scaling.com, a rigorous and performance-based scaling program. Ben’s books have sold millions of copies, and he regularly leads groups and organizations on The Science of Scaling and the realization of impossible goals. He lives with his wife, Lauren, and their 7 kids in Orlando.
Of course, the book is PACKED with Big Ideas. As always, I’m excited to share some of my favorites so let’s get to work!
