New PN: Rise Above

Overcome a Victim Mindset, Empower Yourself, and Realize Your Full Potential
by Scott Barry Kaufman

“Listen. I wish I could tell you it gets better. But it doesn’t get better. You get better."
JOAN RIVERS

FROM THE BOOK
“For most of us, it’s not easy to shift from a victim mindset to one centered on empowerment, and that’s why I wrote this book! I want to help you get there, no matter your life experiences.

At the same time, I won’t ignore or downplay your circumstances. This book will attempt to avoid toxic agency (the idea that you can achieve anything just by lifting yourself up by your bootstraps) as well as toxic passivity (the belief that you are completely helpless and hopeless because your circumstances suck).

Remember when it was considered a great thing to overcome your challenges, conquer your demons, have a positive attitude, be kind to others despite your life circumstance, and positively contribute to society? The fact is, for many of us at least, stories of overcoming are still extremely popular and inspiring. That means that we haven’t lost sight of the value of rising above our past. But instead of letting that notion simmer on the back burner, let’s bring it front and center!

One of the most world-changing, groundbreaking shifts in consciousness you could possibly make right now is to realize just how much life really is what you make it. I’m not saying it’s easy. In fact, nothing in life that’s truly worth having is easy. But it’s possible, and it’s worth it.

This book will use the latest tools of science to help you confront life with healthy vulnerability, bravery, wisdom, self-acceptance, life-acceptance, compassion, creativity, and healing. I assume these are things you want out of life, and as you’re about to see, to a very large extent, you can have them.

Let’s find out how.”

Brian's Notes
I’m a VERY big fan of Scott Barry Kaufman.

And, I’m not alone. As per his bio on the back flap of the book, Scott “is a cognitive psychologist who is among the top one percent most-cited scientists in the world for his groundbreaking research on intelligence, creativity, and human potential. He is a professor at Columbia University and director of the Center for Human Potential. He is also the host of The Psychology Podcast, which has received more than 30 million downloads and is frequently the #1 psychology podcast in the world.”

In addition, and always most importantly, you can tell that he’s a good, wise human being.

This is a REALLY good, and REALLY important book. (Get a copy here.)

Scott brilliantly addresses—with nuance, intellectual humility, and scientific rigor—how to think about sensitive topics like shame, victimhood, trauma, and trigger warnings.

It absolutely delivers on the promise of the sub-title, showing us how to “Overcome a Victim Mindset, Empower Yourself, and Realize Your Full Potential.”

As you’d expect, it’s PACKED with Big Ideas. As always, I’m fired up to share some of my favorites and help you apply that wisdom to YOUR life TODAY, so let’s jump straight in.

P.S. This is the second Note we’ve done on one of Scott’s books. Check out our Notes on Wired to Create. Notes on another one of his *brilliant* books, Transcend, in which he shares “The New Science of Actualization” (extending Abraham Maslow’s work!) coming soon.

P.P.S. In my little note card I use to capture thoughts from the book I want to make sure I share with you, I told myself to tell you about other related Notes I think you’d love.

Here’s the list: Stephen Hayes’ Get Out of Your Mind & Into Your Life, Seligman’s Flourish, Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning, McGonigal’s The Upside of Stress, Siegel’s Mindsight, Neff’s Self-Compassion, Branden’s Six Pillars of Self-Esteem, and Arnold’s Be Useful.

Oh! Can’t forget Jonathan Haidt’s The Coddling of the American Mind.
