New PN: Maintain

The 3 Simple Shifts That Turn Temporary Weight Loss Into Lasting Freedom
by Susan Peirce Thompson

The reason our sense of identity plays such a huge role in weight-loss Maintenance is that we learn who we are by observing our behavior, not the other way around.
SUSAN PEIRCE THOMPSON

FROM THE BOOK
“I have learned three identity shifts that people who keep their weight off long-term make on their Maintenance journey, and in the three parts of this book, I will give you the tools to make these shifts for yourself.
โ€‹
The first shift, which you will learn how to make in Part I, involves transforming from a person who sometimes diets and sometimes doesn’t to someone who just follows the program and supports their health and lifestyle goals forever: someone who is Devoted. The second identity shift, which I’ll teach you how to achieve in Part II, is going from someone who uses food as a stand-in for a range of other unmet needs, such as stress relief, comfort, distraction, or celebration, to someone who has other tools and supports in place, who doesn’t need to ‘use’ food as a crutch anymore. I call that becoming Resourced. The third shift, which you will learn how to make in Part III, is transitioning from someone who prolongs their weight-loss struggle as an emotional and mental distraction, a form of familiar, comfortable angst and obsessive fixation, to someone who has broken free from the tyranny of food and weight and become Liberated to enjoy their brightest life.
โ€‹
None of these shifts are easy to make. I’m not asking you to flip a switch. All three require deep investigation into your relationship with food and dieting. They require inner work and soul searching. They require courage. And they require new, daily actions, faithfully performed, over months and years.
โ€‹
But this book will teach you how to do it, step-by-step, and the reward is that you will reach your goal weight and be ready to move into weight-loss Maintenance as someone who is following your program, who is able to call on myriad resources and get through any life circumstance without turning to food, and who is done with the yo-yo dieting, the food chatter, and the cycle of pride and despair . . . for good. Someone who has moved on. We’ve all heard forever that ‘Diets don’t work—you have to change your lifestyle.’ But nowhere could you find a deep explanation of what that means and how to do it—until now. And when you have achieved all three shifts, you will be able to live from what I call your Maintenance Mindset. From the Maintenance Mindset, you will be able to approach your life—before and after goal weight—in a whole new way.

Brian's Notes
I love Susan Peirce Thompson.

Her personal story, her wisdom, and her passionate commitment to changing the world inspire me deeply.

This is the third Note on one of her books we’ve created. We started with Bright Line Eating, then we covered The Bright Line Eating Cookbook.

Both of those books are fantastic. They provide the basic framework to help people hit their optimal weight. This book, as per the title and that intro above, is all about helping people MAINTAIN their ideal weight and embody their best selves.

The stats are crazy. Susan tells us that 45 million people in the U.S. alone are on a diet in any given year. And, for those who successfully lose weight, VERY FEW keep the weight off.

Enter: Susan Peirce Thompson and this book.

As Robert Lustig (check out our Notes on Fat Chance and Metabolical) says: “Obesity is half biological and half psychological. In BRIGHT LINE EATING Susan Peirce Thompson argued the biological—giving up sugar and ultra-processed foods, including food addiction. Now, in MAINTAIN, she argues the psychological—the changes one needs to make in their relationship with food required to make weight loss sustainable. Only when you master both can you truly break free.”

And, as another one of my favorite Heroic women, Gabrielle Lyon (check out our Notes on Forever Strong and The Forever Strong Playbook) says: “If you want to be strong, fit, and healthy lifelong, you need to know more than what to eat, you need to understand how to MAINTAIN. Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson has elevated the conversation. If you are ready to move past the endless diet struggle, the Maintenance Movement is what you’ve been waiting for.”

As you’d expect, the book is packed with Big Ideas. As always, I’m excited to share some of my favorites and help you apply that wisdom to your life TODAY. Let’s jump straight in.
