New PN: Extreme Balance

Paradoxical Principles That Make You a Champion
by Ben Askren, Joe De Sena, And David Sacks

Extreme virtues can morph into destructive vices.
BEN ASKREN, JOE DE SENA, AND DAVID SACKS, PH.D.

FROM THE BOOK
In Extreme Balance, we’ll give you some essential principles to guide you in your ongoing quest to improve.โ€‹
โ€‹
We won’t tell you what to think but rather give you a framework for how to think about your psychological approach to life’s many forms of combat and performance. We’ll cover strategies for finding balance between two extremes, switching from one mentality to another, and holding competing ideals in your mind. (Putting these principles into practice is up to you.)

Think of this book as you might think of going to a summer training camp. You want a camp with a quality staff and a proven track record of success, and you can expect to learn—or at least be exposed to—solid skills and techniques. But whether you actually use those skills and techniques in competition the following season depends on what you do when the camp is over. How much you benefit by reading these pages depends on what you do with the information after you finish the book. We will provide you with the building blocks for a winner’s mentality and for training and competing the Spartan Way. We hope you put this information to good use.

Brian's Notes
As you know if you’ve been following along, I’m a big fan of Joe De Sena. Joe is the Founder & CEO of Spartan Race. I consider him a Soul Brother.

We’ve featured all of his prior books, including Spartan Up!Spartan FitThe Spartan Way, and 10 Rules for Resilience. We even have his wife’s kid’s books at the Johnson house.

So... When I saw he wrote a new book with Ben Askren (a former 2x NCAA wrestling champion and UFC fighter who now runs a world-class training facility) and David Sacks, Ph.D. (a clinical and sports psychologist who has trained thousands of people), I immediately got it. I read it on a trip to serve some Heroic leaders. I read the first half on the flight and the rest the following morning. And, here we are.

At this stage, I’ve read a LOT of mental toughness and peak performance books. This one’s right there at the top. It provides some REALLY powerful distinctions about the importance of dissolving the apparent dichotomies of life and sport. Whether you’re an athlete or a CEO or a coach or mom or dad looking to forge excellence and activate your Heroic potential and/or to help your kids or clients do the same, I think you’ll love it as much as I did. (Get a copy here.)

As you’d expect, the book is PACKED with Big Ideas. And, as always, I’m excited to share some of my favorites so let’s jump straight in.

P.S. When I read a book, I use a little Heroic note card to keep track of my thoughts and the books I want to reference as I create the Notes. The number of books these guys mention and/or whose wisdom they echo was absurd.
