Big Idea Daily | Think Big to Win Big

The Bigger You Believe, The Bigger You Achieve
by Darrin Donnelly

Can I promise you that if you think big, you’ll accomplish every single thing you set out to do? No. That’s not reality. But thinking big will take you further than you could possibly go by thinking small. It will get you as close to your maximum potential as possible, which is how I define winning.

BIG IDEA
Big Thinkers vs. Small Thinkers

FROM THE BOOK
As this story plays out, Sean learns the principles that separate big thinkers and big achievers from everyone else.
  • Big thinkers believe success is a choice, determined by the size of one’s vision and their commitment to that vision. Small thinkers believe success is determined by lucky breaks.
  • Big thinkers dare to dream big and aren’t afraid to take bold risks. Small thinkers play it too safe and fear what might happen if they aim too high.
  • Big thinkers attach themselves to a bigger purpose and make short-term sacrifices to achieve a long-term vision. Small thinkers focus on ‘what’s in it for me’ in the short term instead of what they can contribute to the larger objective.
  • Big thinkers believe they are bigger than their problems. They rely on big passion and enthusiasm to power through adversity. Small thinkers get easily stressed out when facing adversity and allow short-term defeats to derail them.
  • Big thinkers adopt a growth mindset and are constantly adapting to changing conditions while chasing bigger levels of success. Small thinkers fear change and are always looking for ways to coast and maintain.
  • Big thinkers look beyond temporary setbacks and stay focused on the things they can control. Small thinkers worry constantly about everything that could go wrong, and obsess over the things they can’t control.
  • Big thinkers have a big, optimistic vision for the future. Small thinkers think it’s naive to be optimistic and tend to live in the past.
The bigger you think, the more successful you will be.

Brian's Notes
Which one are YOU?

A Big Thinker or... a Small Thinker.

(Seriously. Are you a big thinker or a small thinker?)

As I read that passage and typed it out for you to enjoy, I thought of two leading psychologists who share the same perspective: Ellen Langer and Ben Hardy.

Ellen Langer was the first woman EVER granted full tenure in Harvard’s Psychology Department. She created a field of study known as the “Psychology of Possibility.”

In her classic book Mindfulness, she tells us: “When we think of resources being limited, we often think of our own abilities. Here, too, our notion of limits may inhibit us. We may push ourselves to what we believe are our limits, in swimming, public speaking, or mathematics. However, whether they are true limits is not determinable.

It may be in our best interest to proceed as though these and other abilities might be improved upon, so that at least we will not be deterred by false limits. It was once assumed that humans could not run the mile in fewer than five minutes. In 1922 it was said to be ‘humanly impossible’ to run the mile in less than four minutes. In 1952 that limit was broken by Roger Bannister. Each time a record is broken, the supposed limit is extended. Yet the notion of limits persists.”

Then there’s Ben Hardy.

Ben is the author of a ton of books and holds the title of my new favorite author.

His main focus?

YOU’RE CAPABLE OF A LOT MORE THAN YOU THINK.

Check out my Notes on The Science of Scaling (which directly impacted the next phase of Heroic) and Be Your Future Self Now (which is an incredible treatise on “The Science of Intentional Transformation”).

In The Science of Scaling, Ben quotes Langer: “The hefty price for accepting information uncritically is that we go through life unaware that what we’ve accepted as impossible may in fact be quite possible.”

The main theme of that book?

THINK BIG TO WIN BIG.

How much bigger?

AT LEAST 10x BIGGER.

He ends that book with this: “Scaling is not for the faint of heart. But it is for you. You can achieve what seems like 10, 20, even 30 years of growth in the next three. Just simply use time as a tool as part of your impossible goal. Use that goal to force much better decision-making here and now.

While the world is increasingly becoming caught in a see of louder and louder noise, you can be the exception. You can be focused. You can scale. Will you?”

He ends Be Your Future Self Now with this: “In 2 years, 5 years, 10 years, or 20, barring fatality, you will become someone. The question to ask yourself is: Who will your Future Self be? That is, perhaps, the most important question any human can ask themself.”

So...

How will YOU think bigger TODAY?

Your Future Self is counting on you.

Whether we realize it or not, we’re living up to—or down to—the expectations we set for ourselves. Life tends to give us what we think we deserve; what we think we’re worthy of.
