A Guide to True Greatness and Deep Satisfaction in a Chaotic Worldby Brad Stulberg |
“Excellence is not a destination; it is a process of becoming. The real reward isn’t a bigger deadlift, a faster mile, or a sturdier table. The real reward is that you become a better version of yourself.”BRAD STULBERG |
BIG IDEA
What Is Excellence?
FROM THE BOOK“Excellence combines mastery and mattering.
Mastery means developing skill and making progress in activities you deem worthwhile. It could result from learning a trade or advancing a career, but it could also come from increasing the weight of your deadlift, writing poetry, building a table, making art, or learning how to play an instrument. Mattering is a sense that what you are doing has significance, that your contributions and progress are meaningful. Decades of research show mastery and mattering are key to a life well lived, or what psychologists call life satisfaction.
We experience the high of excellence when we are creating it, and we are drawn to it as witnesses. It’s the sculpture that elicits a cascade of emotions. The motorcycle that tightly grips the road. The basketball jump shot comprised of one hundred small movements harmoniously flowing together. The craftsperson’s practiced hammer’s strike on a nail. The rhythm of a great sentence. The leader whose calm yet forceful presence commands the attention of an entire room. The back-and-forth of an absorbing conversation. The surgeon operating at her full scope, knowing each surgical tool, incision line, and nerve ending. The poignant turn in a powerful song. Like a finely tuned instrument, excellence exudes an attractiveness and rightness that we know not only in our heads, but also in our hearts.
It’s a big part of what makes life worth living.”

Brian's Notes
That’s from the introduction.

What is excellence?
Think: Mastery + Mattering.
Stated slightly differently shortly after that passage: Excellence is “An ongoing process of growth and becoming that imbues life with meaning and vigor. It emerges from involved engagement in something worthwhile that supports your values and goals.
Excellence combines mastery and mattering. It is not something that is out of reach but rather it is your birthright, a core part of your nature.”
To clarify what excellence is, Brad delineates it from what it isn’t.
Excellence is NOT perfectionism.
Excellence is NOT obsession.
Excellence is NOT optimization.
Excellence is NOT happiness.
Excellence is NOT flow.
Excellence is NOT obsession.
Excellence is NOT optimization.
Excellence is NOT happiness.
Excellence is NOT flow.
Note: As I read the line about excellence exuding “an attractiveness and rightness we know not only in our heads, but in our hearts,” I wrote “moral charisma” in the margin and I thought of wisdom from Edward Slingerland’s GREAT book, Trying Not to Try.
Then, a few pages later, Brad reflected on Slingerland’s neuroscientifically-grounded perspective that we can feel excellence in others. We’ll talk more about that in a moment when we explore the philosophical foundations of excellence.
P.S. One of the people Brad comes back to most often in the book is George Leonard. Check out our Notes on Mastery for more of his wisdom on how to attain excellence.
P.P.S. The guy Brad comes back to the most often is Robert Pirsig and his classic Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values. I read that book forever ago and I think I might need to go back and reread it and Note-ify it!
