Creating our ideal lives.

I love that process.

Stephen Covey provides a useful tool to help us imagine and create our ideals.

He likes to say that we all have “Roles” that we play and that, to be effective, we need to create “Goals” for all those roles.

Roles and Goals.

Flows nicely, eh?

(For the record: Tony Robbins talks about “Categories of Improvement” for which you create your ideal vision… more on that another time…)

So, what Roles do you have?

Perhaps Husband or Wife?

Mother or Father?

Friend?

Entrepreneur or scholar or professional?

Identify these Roles.

Then create your Goals for each.

Some of my Roles?

Student of Life, Teacher, Lover/Partner, Friend, Entrepreneur…

Some of my (long-term/high level) Goals (as of 7:45 am on Thursday, October 17, 2007)?

Student of Life: I passionately soak up all the wisdom I possibly can—viewing life as my classroom as I strive to grow in every moment.

Teacher: I take the time to share the wisdom I’m learning in fun, inspiring and practical bits of wisdom people can integrate into their lives immediately—empowering them to discover their truth and to go out and change their life.

Lover/Partner: I give myself to my relationship—supporting my Goddess in living her highest potential and most fully expressing her creative gifts, re-committing to the ideals of our relationship when we face challenges and remembering the amazing spiritual growth and connection I get by being in relationship.

Friend: I have fun with and support my friends by holding a mirror to their highest potential—giving them the space and encouragement to let their light shine fully!

Entrepreneur: I circulate abundance in the world as I give my creativity and receive abundance in return.

From there we can drill deeper into the more near-term Goals. So, for example, today I may have these goals:

Student of Life: Today I will notice when I start drifting from my highest self and shift back to what my ideal self would do in any challenging moment.

Teacher: I will write 10 “Big Ideas” today! (This is already #9. :))

Lover/Partner: I will communicate with my Goddess about our little tiff last night and dissolve the tension. :) [note: it’s 8:18am on the same day and we just had an amazing conversation with equally amazing distinctions (for another Big Idea :))… how great it feels to honor our commitments and hit our goals! :))]

Friend: I’ll have an awesome hike with Dave today and be present and available to support him however I can.

Entrepreneur: I will fine-tune the ideal map of the new thinkArete.com site and communicate this in detail with my (brilliant!) developer and designer as we get ready to launch next week.

How about you?
